Banking quality = Number of TNC (cells) extracted during processing and expressed as a percentage (%)
Reasons to bank with Progenics ..
The average recovery rate of TNC for all banked samples is 97.7% (20% higher than other results that have been published in scientific journals). Most importantly, the average recovery rate is based on all cord blood banked with Progenics and is not based on a small number of experimental samples or on a small portion of banked cord blood samples. This distinguishes Progenics’ results from claims that are made by most other banks.
The average contamination by red blood cells measured by hematocrit is 8.5%, which is 2-4 times better than other results that have been published.
Progenics defines processing success as a recovery rate (yield) of total nucleated cells that is ≥ 85%. At Progenics, the chance of obtaining a yield of TNC that is <85% is ~2 out of every 1,000 cord blood samples processed. For most other cord blood banks, the likelihood of obtaining a recovery rate (yield) of TNC that is less than 85% is over 50 out of 100 cord blood samples processed. At Progenics, the processing success rate is hundreds of times higher than at other banks.
There is only one chance to process cord blood, so the processing success rate is critical.
The certificate contains results for the recovery rate of TNC (%) and the concentration of red blood cells (Hct) that is left in the banked final cord blood product after processing. To our knowledge, the certificate is the only one of its kind worldwide. In addition, our quality has been published in a peer-reviewed journal (Yang H et al, Transfusion 2011).
Progenics guarantees that our clients’ cord blood banking service will be absolutely free, including all banking fees plus 20 years of free storage if the recovery rate (yield) of TNC is below 85%. To our knowledge, Progenics is the only cord blood bank in this field that offers this guarantee.
In addition,
The viability of nucleated cells after processing is higher (94.8% for Progenics’ processing method, vs 87.9%, 93.2% and 89.5% for other processing methods, based on published information).
At Progenics, the average time between collection of cord blood and processing is 15.5 hours based on all processed samples, which could be the shortest time frame in this field. The length of time between collection and processing is a critical factor that affects banking quality, and it is preferred that cord blood be processed within 24 hours after collection (Pope B., et al Transfusion 2012), although even a time frame of 48 hours is acceptable in this field.
After cord blood is collected, it must be delivered to the processing laboratory within the shortest possible time under temperature controlled conditions, which is most important to ensure the highest banking quality. The cost of superior courier service is significantly higher; however, Progenics will assist parents in order to make it more affordable. Please call Progenics for details.
We use Pall cord blood collection bags which are sterile both inside and outside, which is critical for collecting cord blood safely, especially for C-sections. The bag is FDA NDA approved and CE marked under the Medical Devices Directive for the collection of cord blood.
We use Pall freezing bags that have two compartments, so the cord blood stem cells could either be used for up to two transplants, or one compartment could be used for expansion and the other for a direct transplant.
Taking into consideration all of the quality indicators, Progenics’ quality is superior to all other banks worldwide based on available information that has been published in scientific and medical journals.
